There are millions of reasons to visit Morocco. You have all heard about Marrakech with the magical square Jemaa el-Fna, and we can assure you that the reality beats all descriptions of this city. And there is more! Fes with its UNESCO listed Medina (old town), bohemian, artsy Essaouira at the ocean, blue village Chefchaouen, sunlovers’ and surfers’ paradise Agadir. Add to this, the coastal towns of Tanger, Rabat, Casablanca. If you are flying into Málaga you can catch the train to Algeciras (around 4 h) and from there the ferry to Tanger (1,5 h) or fast ferry from Tarifa. Of course, you can also choose to fly in directly to Morocco. The starting point for our tours are normally Marrakech.
An essential ingredient on our trips are deep dive into the local culture and so also in Morocco where we get closer to the berber culture, correctly Amazigh culture. The Imazighen have been here since ancient times and before Arabs started to settle in the country.
MARRAKECH – is a true explosion for all your senses and our starting point for the tours. Some tips on places you will not normally find in travel guides. Atelliers d’allieurs gives hands on workshops with Marrakchi master craftsmen in their studios. You can make your own pair of babouche slippers or follow a course in tadelakt (plaster), basketry, pottery or cooking. It’s an opportunity to meet the artisans and hear their stories. Something to eat? Henna café is more than just a cafe, it is a registered Cultural Association providing a multicultural meeting place, a cafe, a henna salon, a gallery of art by local aspiring artists. All of the profits are used to various forms of community support. Chez Maazouz, another hidden gem in Djemaa-el-Fna, a beautiful restaurant with Amazigh inspired decor on the middle floor and an excellent rooftop view. And of course, we have other hidden gems for you. For accommodation we recommend one of the many traditional Riads.
A landscape full of surprises
The landscape is varied and we recommend a road trip once there. You can travel from the Atlantic coast to the Sahara Desert, through the mesmerizing Atlas Mountains, green lush villages and mountain passes. Pure beauty! We will do stops in villages along the way, having food in local guest houses or with families. Maybe we cook together and attend a local event. The amazigh, the original people of Morocco, has been living here for centuries.
Trekking with nomads
You can take part in Transhumance – a nomad journey arranged by the Ait Atta nomads and Morocco Green Tours. You get to accompany a nomad family when they migrate through the Atlas mountains. This is immersion into their daily lives and culture in a deep sense; sharing time, meals, and work tasks with the nomads. The trekking is for 11 nights/12 days. You move slowly in a caravan through captivating landscapes on ancient walking trails, through mountain passages. These migration journeys are done in September and in May. A real challenge and an experience you will never forget.
Homestay with nomads
You stay 3 days with a nomad family in the high Atlas Mountains. Morocco Green Tours’ driver/guide Hassan will pick you up from your riad in Marrakech and he will also, himself being Amazigh, be the translator during the stay. During the drive you can enjoy the beautiful landscape of the Atlas mountains. You will get a warm welcome by your hosts sharing Moroccan tea. By partaking in daily tasks, fetching water and fire wood, preparing meals and helping out with the goats you get familiar with the nomadic way of life. You get to admire the starry nights of the Atlas Mountains, sitting around the fire, sharing the evening meal, stories and laughter.
